maybe getting rid of digital... and going back to film Leica

I was playing at a gig the other day and a guy was there shooting with a really flash digital. He showed me it and proclaimed with the air only the upperclass could use (it was a rich party) 'once you go digital you will never go back!!'

I then proceeded to tell him i had gone to digital and now im back to film. He shut up pretty quickly haha

I'm chasing my tail, 'round and 'round. I recently sold my Leica gear to buy a Canon 5D and a bunch of lenses in order to get more acceptances and sell more stock photos. The Canon is great, but not too satisfying to use.

I couldn't resist getting a pair of Voigtlanders and some lenses. They're great, too.

Today, I bid and got a lovely M6 on ebay. I Guess it will replace the R2A and function alongside the R3A. So now I have a Leica again.

The cycle continues. I'm getting dizzy.

Howdy folks, I have couple of things in my mind.

About 8-10 months ago I sold my Leica M2 + 35/2 summicron and purchased a Nikon D200 + mf-nikon gear and now I admit that this was a BIG mistake. The only thing that have kept me selling my digital gear is the fact that it is sort of necessity to have if I'm about to shoot "for customers"...but, I hate D200, I hate that crappy viewfinder (I miss the focus all the time with mf-lenses), I really really do not enjoy shooting digitally...I'm starting to loose the joy in this photography thingy...the "ZEN" which I have in my film-work, that is totally missing when working with digital. So I've been thinking of selling all my Nikons and moving back to film Leica. My personal project are 100% documentary stuff and I've been thinking that it would be smarter to focus on those projects and trying to improve my photography career by selling those personal projects / photo stories...not by shooting digitally some useless cr*p for paying customers. And since I do all my personal stuff in b&w and love working with analog gear I think this is propably not the stupidiest move known to mankind. Ok, this was my monolog and here is the question;

What would be the "best" combination for M-body and 35mm lens? I loved my M2 and it was just perfect tool -- I would be happy with that, but since I have not looked at current prices I don't know which M-body has the best "price/quality" ratio... Metering could be nice, but not I am not sure if I'm willing to pay extra for that feature since I tend to use handheld meter most of the time -- even if I have a camera that meters.

What about lenses? I had a helluva deal on my 35/2 summicron and I really doubt that I can't find another one eith that price tag... So, maybe some Voigtländer or something...? I need the lens to be f2 or faster.

The total budget would be around 800-1000 euros (in other words, I just realized that I need to buy a meterless body because of the budget).

Freude, schöner Götterfunken
Tochter aus Elysium,
Wir betreten feuertrunken,
Himmlische, dein Heiligtum!
Deine Zauber binden wieder
Was die Mode streng geteilt;
Alle Menschen werden Brüder,
(Schiller: Was der Mode Schwert geteilt;
Bettler werden Fürstenbrüder,)
Wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt.
Chor
Seid umschlungen, Millionen!
Diesen Kuss der ganzen Welt!
Brüder - über'm Sternenzelt
Muss ein lieber Vater wohnen.
Ihr stürzt nieder, Millionen?
Ahnest du den Schöpfer, Welt?
Such' ihn über'm Sternenzelt!
Über Sternen muss er wohnen.
Wem der große Wurf gelungen,
Eines Freundes Freund zu sein;
Wer ein holdes Weib errungen,
Mische seinen Jubel ein!
Ja, wer auch nur eine Seele
Sein nennt auf dem Erdenrund!
Und wer's nie gekonnt, der stehle
Weinend sich aus diesem Bund!
Freude trinken alle Wesen
An den Brüsten der Natur;
Alle Guten, alle Bösen
Folgen ihrer Rosenspur.
Küsse gab sie uns und Reben,
Einen Freund, geprüft im Tod;
Wollust ward dem Wurm gegeben,
Und der Cherub steht vor Gott.
Froh, wie seine Sonnen fliegen
Durch des Himmels prächt'gen Plan,
Laufet, Brüder, eure Bahn,
Freudig, wie ein Held zum Siegen.

Brüder, über'm Sternenzelt
Muss ein lieber Vater wohnen.

well , for what is worth here is my story :

i started photography when I picked up a Canon T70 or my father. Nicely done camera, bit confusing metering, splendid lens.

Then I grew up and wanted to learn more. But I figured that digital was better, my father owned a Olympus PS at the time and it was great to learn about photo basics. So I gathered a few money and bought one of my best digital cameras to date > Fuji S2 PRO. Digital means that in a few months whatever you bought its old. not old school, just old.

so I went upgrading the camera to >

Nikon D100 * didnt like it, took my S2 back
Nikon D1x brilliant AF for the time, nice files
Canon 1Ds best digital camera ever, period. film like signature. heavy as brick though
and finally I went back to Nikon with a D2x.

Then I stopped. I went from a zoom like user to a prime user ( when I had the 1Ds my lens were a 24 L 1.4 , 35 1.4 L and a 135 F2 L , period ) and i had sometimes more sharpness that I would like. Problem was that I had to rent a mule ( or two ) to lug around all the material I need - filters, expodiscs, digital disks, cards, flash, extra batteries, etc ).

So I traded in for a D2x and a 17/55 zoom. I want compactness. Problem was that the D2x ( and I traded in for almost free for a D2xs ) albeit being much smaller is still kind of a statment of "hey, I like picture, look at me ".

That meant that from time to time when I was going out, I left the camera home. Kinda like not going to the gym because you dont want to sweat and you fell lazy. When I noticed that ( and my pictures started to suffer ), I made a radical decision :

trade in all stuff for a Leica M7 + 35 F2 ASPH + 90 F2 ASPH. best trade so far. now photography is AGAIN photography. best analogy i can refer to is a sniper and a automatic rifle > with digital you press the button , few shots are fired and you hope that in the midle of the action, you get it. You dont know until the smoke is out if you get it and you have to check the LCD, etc etc. It seems that you dont control much, its much up to the camera and well, the gun to do the job. You just press the trigger. A leica ( or a RF for what that matters ) you are much more like a sniper > you wait and you grab the moment, you dont fire 1000's and hope to catch the moment. once you get use to RF and NOT being shutter blind ( like an SLR when you shoot ) , you will know in that moment if you seized the opportunity. Plus with that big viewfinder you can decide if the guy that is passing by and is comming into the frameline, if he should stay inside or not the photo.

Plus all that and you have the ZEN feeling that those pictures you took are REALLY you that did ALL the hard work > YOU FOCUSED. YOU METERED, YOU CHOOSE. that is the best thing > when I see my couple photos that I consider very good that I took with my leica, I think "man, Im proud, was me". When I see the other 100's that are garbage, I dont think "oh the AF locked here or there". no, I think "man, you moron, you focused here instead of there. or why the heck you metered here instead of there?!" its not the cameras fault. its not some gadget fault. its YOUR fault.

Sometimes some accountability its nice. So are the rewards.

Now to make this statment look like an advertisement I should add " My name is Goncalo Proenca and I changed from digital to film and I-m not into a psychic ward, I feel great".

Grab a few more euros and grab a ZI camera instead of a bessa. Sure, they all take the same pictures. But I didnt like the touch an feel of a bessa. I did like the ZI, its gorgeous feeling and it has a massive bright viewfinder ( better than leica by the way ).

Hope it helped,

Goncalo

Wow, this transition from digital to Leica went fast! It took me just six days (and weekend in the middle!) to get rid off D200 and to find a nice Leica... m6...mmmmmm.... I would say that I am a happy camper right now, I hope I feel the same after the test roll is finished :)
