Description:

Today for sale is my version 1 Leica Elmarit 28mm F2.8 from 1968. Leica's first fast wide. This lens is a true wide-angle (symmetrical) with 9 elements and has ‘Red Scale’ markings.The version 1 Elmarit was part of Leica’s original black lens line up and has a black epoxy (Eloxal) finish. This is one of roughly 200 version 1’s made in Germany with the other 1800 version 1’s 'Yellow Scale' made in Canada. This lens is marked “Wetzlar” and “Made In Germany.” All except one other version 1 that I’ve seen has a serial number in the 206 range while this one has a 225+ serial, which should make this one a Canadian. This lens is also threaded for 48mm filters and has a chrome infinity lock like the Canadian lenses. This lens is extremely uncommon and collectible.

The lens is in excellent overall condition with no scratches or cleaning marks. Mechanics are typical old school Leica; SOLID. If you intend on being my hero and want to use this lens, a cla or at least a helical relube to loosen it’s tight but smooth focus throw would make it a spectacular user. The Elmarit version 1's character is very similar to the Super Angulon 21mm F3.4.

Here are some other interesting facts about the lens :

James Lager (Leica an Illustrated History) says, the first version was mainly produced in Canada, though some were engraved "Wetzlar". Dennis Laney (Leica Collector's guide) says, the first version was produced in Wetzlar; the second in Canada, which corresponds with Paul Henry Van Hasbroek (Leica in Color.)

• 1965 - 1972. Serial # range 2,061,501 - 2,533,850. Leica Code 11801. Min. focus .7m, filter is Series VII with some later using E48. Symmetrical lens design. Cannot be used on an M5 or CL due to projecting rear cell. Optimum performance between F4 and F5.6. Vignetting 2.7 stops. Designed in Wetzlar.

$ 2,400-3,400 (Wetzlar marked add $ 2,000 )

• (v.1) symmetrical 28 Elmarit 1965-1972 (low distortion). Rear element comes very close to the shutter/film/sensor plane. Will damage the metering arms of M5/CL cameras unless it has a modified mount to keep the metering arm in its well (no metering). Will not damage post-1978 cameras, but will block metering light path in M6/7/digital cameras**, so requires hand-held or estimated light metering on those. 48mm filters. Will produce some color stains around the edges on full-color digital Ms (a la the also-deep 21mm Super-Angulons). Now a collectors' item.

I’ve been in touch with Jakob Eberhard at Leica Germany and he hasn’t been able to explain why this lens’ serial number doesn’t correspond to it’s Wetzlar and German engravings. He is very interested and is currently investigating. I’ve spoken to a collector that speculates that it may be part of a custom order and is part of a small batch made in Germany while regular production was already in Canada. I’ve also been in touch with Westlich auction house and they wanted this lens for the June auction but I would like to sell this myself and save the 18% commission to help me with bills, living expenses and my deadliest vice. Leicas ! :-)

My price for the lens including the correct Leitz 12501 hood and deep rear lens cap is $4000 obo including fully insured shipping and PayPal fees. The lens is potentially worth a lot more but certainly not less. If you’re located within a 3 hour train ride/1hr flight from Berlin I can deliver it personally.

P.s. My M4 is not for sale but if you insist on having it, make me an offer. It’s all original, on the list and in perfect working order.

Looks awesome. Good luck with the sale.

By by the way, how did you source a Millenium shutter dial for a LHSA M6. I recall you mentioning it in the past?  Might be interested in swapping it myself.

Wow, what an interesting lens! I once had the chance to use a 28/2.8 Elmarit 1st version and really liked the rendering of that lens. GLWS!!

This is my second time seeing a "red scale" Elmarit 28/2.8 v1 for sale. I agree the write-up is interesting. Lem certainly knows what he sells.
