I'm currently reading Three Shades of Blue and came across a brief reference to a documentary film called A Great Day in Harlem made by Jean Bach.

The film is available to view free on YouTube here

It tells the story of the making, in 1958, of an iconic portrait of 57 of the jazz greats of their day, assembled on the steps of a brownstone building in Harlem for an Esquire photo shoot. The nerve of the young photographer and art director in attempting this, the dynamics of a crowd of this size slowly self-organising into one amazing composition and the camaraderie and happiness of the group are all truly uplifting.

There's also a beautifully produced book by the photographer's son telling parts of the background story and showing the contact sheets from the shoot and some great incidental portraits.

The details of the book are here.

A wonderful coming together of four of my favourite things Jazz, black and white photography, photobooks, and documentary film-making.
