Anyone know how to paint brass with a high gloss finish? and how to remove chrome from brass without damaging it?

Thanks
Rob

Edit: I know about nitrocellulose lacquer, but I'm trying to stay away from that due to its volatility.

DIY SLR and Rangefinder

DIY SLR and Rangefinder

This guy designed, machined, and built his own 35 mm SLR inlcuding a Leica-type focal plane cloth shutter.
See http://www.collection-appareils.fr/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=6946 (in French) and http://www.collection-appareils.fr/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=8822 (for an English translation of the thread).

He has also made a 35 mm rangefinder camera, see http://www.collection-appareils.fr/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=9185 (sorry, only in French so far). <br />

I would suspect you need to etch-prime the brass for the paint to stick. The same goes for aluminium. An etch primer eats its way into the brass, they are normally two pack.

My pictorial for a DIY lens clean of a Canon 50/1.2 RF lens is here, in this article I describe how to hack the Perfex Wollensak 50/2.8 into a Leica LTM mount, and here you can read how to load 120 spool film into a 620 Kodak Medalist II.

All these articles are available as a PDF file, and on my web site (see signature)

Johan- I would like to see the Perfex Mod, but get an error on the page.

Hi Brian,

the link to the web site page is here. Pictures load without any issue on it, so not sure why the other link produced an error...

shutter curtain instruction from Aki Asahi

shutter curtain instruction from Aki Asahi

How to replace your shutter curtains, the easy way. Does not include removal and re-fitting of the mechanism. Materials sold by AA on this page.

Very interesting link, Buzzardkid!

I have a fairly oddball restoration project, and I'm looking for instruction links to restore a historic Praktiflex SLR (built in Dresden 1940) w/ a CZJ Tessar 5cm/f3.5 plus a Schneider-Kreuznach Xenar 10.5 cm/f4.5.

I need instructions on
  • camera body disassembly & general cleaning
  • Changing the VF (flip) mirror
  • VF alignment
  • changing shutter curtains
  • shutter speed adjustment
  • general disassembly, cleaning & realignment of the lenses
Also, any hints about camera technicians in Europe who specialize in vintage SLRs would be appreciated.

Johan,

I downloaded a couple of your .pdf files, bu they seem to have a problem - the text blocks between the pictures (particularly in the Canon lens one) seem to have run into just one line - i.e. the text is superimposed on itself, so you can't read it.

What version did you compile for?

Dunno? I linked to the option of making an article available in PDF through Joomla, the CMS that I am using for my website. Not sure what software is used to compile that PDF. I'll have a look.

All the articles I linked to as PDF can also easily be found on my website as well, in the Photo Gear section. There's five articles listed in full, the older ones are linked to at the bottom of the page. Enjoy!

Restoring LF lenses

Restoring LF lenses

Hi,

a small link and bit of info on vintage LF lenses: how to clean out those 'busted' lenses and re-align the elements. Here.

Also, how to calculate aperture sizes on old LF lenses, here.

And, how to deduce focal length for lenses that do not have their focal length on the barrel, here.

Johan,

All the website pages work fine, thanks. I wonder if the pdf creator in Joomla is a printer driver type? It's not doing your work any favours. I would suggest creating them again on your PC using something like PDFCreator (freeware).

Thanks for some interesting articles :)

working on a new pictorial

working on a new pictorial

Hi,

I'm working on a new pictorial on my website. It will be up tonight.

Meanwhile, here's a sneak preview picture. Clues: That is a Leica SCNOO trigger winder, but it ain't the standard silk ribbon they were fitted with in the factory...
