So, I have started shooting with my M8 again, but at random times if I try to take a shot, the camera show"Bottom cover open" error message and locks up all functionality. Yes, the baseplate is securely fastened.

With some combo of turning on/off, removing battery, and SD cards, it would work fine for some unknown time until the message comes up again.

Has anyone experience this issue? What can possibility cause this? Bad battery, hinges, or something more underlaying...?

YOLY on my M9, which may or may not be the same as your M8, there is a tiny recessed switch near the battery which is depressed by a knob on the inside face of the base plate. The switch notifies the camera whether the base plate is on or off.
I have read in the past that sometimes this switch goes faulty, or the the knob on the base plate fails to activate it.
You could try fiddling with the switch or maybe adding some height to the activation knob with a tiny dab or epoxy or something.
