A new exhibition at the Leica Galerie in Konstanz, Germany, presents the ongoing work of Paolo Burlando, a documentary photographer from Italy.
These are about the best answers to the questions of "Why Leica?" and "Why a Rangefinder?" as I have read anywhere. In my experience, they ring true. My first M camera back in 2003 certainly changed the way I took pictures.
Another take away from the article that should give all of us reason for optimism is this: "All in all, the exhibition is an excellent example of what a serious amateur photographer can achieve."

I like his explanation of why a rangefinder, and why Leica: “I got a used Leica M6 for my 40th birthday,” says Burlando, “with one lens. It changed the way I took pictures. Since then, he has stuck to the rangefinder, preferably with a Summicron 35 attached. Leica is his camera of choice “because of the optical quality, the discreet look, the portability and, yes, the iconic design."Quote
