Pixii PORN

A piece of modern art IMHOP. Hopefully the engineering matches. For now I am hanging on to my Pansonic Lumix with the aspherical "Leica" lens logo, DMC-3TZ3 and Contax I, II and ...... Hopefully we will have some images from the new engineering marvel soon and an engineering report.

Well, I may have to defer here. I was deemed as not bright enough for Ancient Greek and was dosed with Cicero and Caesar instead. However I do have the memory that the reference is to prostitutes and prostitution. And while Wikipedia is not an academic source it does support this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pornography#Etymology And it is important to look at intent in the thread. There is none that would point toward injury or slight. It is a light-hearted reference to another form of self-indulgence, expensive toys.

It was about women that were captured in wars and then sold as sex-slaves in order to fulfill the desires of men as well as a form of punishment for the people that lost the war. Laterr women often received payment for that act so that's how it evolved.

The fact that wikipedia doesn't have a page for it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It only has a page for "porn" + "graphy" which is illustration of the act. You just described the last word, I am telling you the origin for the first part of the word and the one being used for the title and other things.

You can defer all you want, but I am greek so there's that.

As I mentioned before, the core of the problem is the desire for objects. It has nothing to do with photography. Unfortunately, the title reflects some bad aspects of the object/gear-oriented culture and many times our inability to look beyond our desires.

We are a consumer culture. It is a function of our economic system, modified late stage capitalism. I think I got that right. I had only one econ course, in ~1967. Cicero in ~'54. Laudo, laudas, laudat, laudamus, laudatus, laudant. I'll skip the other five active tenses much to all our relief. I have long forgotten the passive, gerundive and supine. My Latin Master, Mr. Bacon, would be disappointed, but not surprised.

I think I qualified my reference to Wikipedia as not being a real academic source. I did not know the deeper meanings. I also believe that slavery could be transient in Ancient Greece as opposed to the eternal version we had here in the US and through much of the New World. But we are not here for all that prattle. We are bold, we are here for Pixii prattle! LOL We should stay close to the threads. I hope I have not triggered pedants as bad as myself. Sheesh. Lifetime ban.

Unfortunately for you it doesn't work ;) and also I do not want to kill your enthusiasm for Pixii. But I respect your decision and from now on will not be replying to you anymore.

Whoa! I enjoy the exchange. We have a language problem. You will not dampen my current enthusiasm and if you sign off you could miss my bleeding from mortal wounds. I do not think I will be disappointed in the Pixii but we all know that "the first six months of any relationship are good." I am sure I will know quickly if I got a good camera. I will be out with it clicking a lot as I have only a 15 day window for returns. I have a few lenses to compare to the M8.2, a fair APS-C to APS-H comparison. And the M8.2 for its shortcomings does offer some wonderful images

Please, if I have unintentionally offended you accept my amends.

"Show me a word, any word, and I will show you that the root of that word is Greek": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXt0VCPKfQ4

I do hope my argument didn't come out as that (a nationalistic pride) as I have very little of that if any.

I confess that I actively tried to derail this thread because I hated its title . Maybe the head can ban me for that... I do hope that we keep the lively Pixii discussions on the various other threads though and let this one have the slow decline to the forum abyss it so deserves.

PS. No offense taken.

The Helenes have a lot to be proud of. I do not think there has ever been an intellectual and artistic equal to the Golden Age. And to think of the countless plays and poems lost in the fire at the Library of Alexandria. Compared to what we have read imagine what we cannot ever read. Just for Αβγολέμονο you deserve a seat at any table, figurative or literal.

I think there is a problem with the language, too. While you know the depth of the word we know it only in a simpler sense and find it less offensive. Perhaps it is cultural in addition to language. My maternal side is bi-lingual German and when my aunts and mother were swearing a lot in German our Aunt Frieda let loose a string of horrendous swear words in English as a part of a conversation. It sounded as innocuous to her in English as their swearing sounded to them in German. My aunts and my mother stopped swearing in German. I have seen it happen in other languages in my life, too. As an example of how a word can have different shadings in different languages, elegant has a meaning in English. In German, eleganten is an order of magnitude greater. Sh*t is quite coarse in English but used more in German and French with less offense. In Spanish one can say, "Esta bueno" for "it is good." A common phrase. Change the gender to "Esta buena" and you have said the approximate "I want to jump on your bones, mamma!" In English itself we have a virtual patois and it is easy to get in trouble within this language itself.

Anyway, Pixii!

I speak German for well over 40 years. What is "eleganten"?

Well, in my family and in Google Translate it is German for "elegant." However, when I have heard it used and used it myself in German it meant "elegant" of English on steroids. The old Berlin Kempinski, "Das war ein eleganten Hotel." Maybe it was just the Berliner spin on "eleganten." OTOH other Germans I knew way back had the same impression, that in German the word carried more weight and import. Perhaps this will help: https://translate.google.com/?sl=de&...n&op=translate

I am not native-born but grew up with German spoken around me regularly and became quite fluent myself and can remember Oma saying that this or that " . . . es war eleganten." Aber nicht Du? Berlinerdialekt? It was common in my family.
