small flash with 2AA for RD1/RF...

The Sunpak Auto 33 is small, surprisingly powerful, and has a built-in PC cable that folds neatly into the surface of the flash.
 
Should the flash be compact when transported or also when used? I ask because flashes are a bit like tripods, in the sense that usually small and good do not go together. LED panels are increasingly being used also professionally and they are flat, not small but easy to carry around, plus the fact that they give continuous light means that, without triggers or anything, you can get the panel as close to the subject as you need (closer actually gives a softer light).

so i have an R-D1 and a nikon sb-24 i cant get the epson to fire the flash.. i can make my other cameras fire it but not the epson any tips?
