I recently bought a LEICA SUMMICRON-M 50 f/2. Can you tell me what version this would be?

Is there a focusing TAB? Telescoping vs. removable hood? Type IV or V I would guess.
Quick summary Type I - VI: https://www.leicalensesfornormalpeople.com/2020/04/12/leica-m-summicron-50mm/
I don't know much about modern summicron 50's but have you tried plugging in the serial number here for the year?

...and also here up to fourth version: https://www.antiquecameras.net/50summicronmlenses.html

Well spotted but we really need the serial number...
Just looked at my Type 5 and it's also 52.2mm so if I say "snap" do I win it?

version five (V)
Yes, I think it's a version V also. I think so because it has the milled focusing ring, which is common to both the Version III and V; but the one shown looks like it has a pull-out hood, which neither the Version III nor IV have. And the IV had a focusing tab, and no milled ring. SO I think it's a V.

Some information and opinions here on the ver 5.

If one doesn't care for the built-in hood, they could always get a third-party one with 39mm screw threads.

The small numbers next to th M mark (22) is added to the focal length to give you the true focal length of the lens.

Why are they all 22's?

The numbers vary from lens to lens. I had a 90 Tele-Elmar that was 00, indicating it was exactly 90mm in focal length. The 35 Summicron was marked 05 so it was actually 35.05mm. It's a Leica thing to let you know they are checking the lenses before they ship them.

They can have that much variance between individual lenses?

Yes I have the version IV and its quite different in body shape (more tapered), the fact that it has a focussing tab and the lack of a pull out hood. Earlier versions look quite different to the one shown in this thread too and were never made with a inbuilt hood. The overall configuration of this lens shouts late Leica 50mm Summicron. So without going to the web to search further I am in the Summicron Version V camp too.

Wow, after all of these years, I've learned something very new.

FWIW, I just thought it strange that all the ones we've mentioned and the ones on the links were marked "22" and nothing else. Over the years/decades I've seen a lot of them on various lenses of mine and they've all varied until now. and all the V5...

You may be on to something. I posted a photo of the M6 TTL Millennium I had owned over on LUF. It had a V5 50 Summicron mounted on it and when I took a closer look, it was marked 22. Maybe there aren’t any actual 50mm V5 Summicrons?
