Some photos from Cuba

Thanks a lot. I just use 'noir' filter on my iPhone. On a couple of the photos I adjusted the contrast and/or shadows but most of the photos haven't been adjusted besides the 'noir' filter.

Thanks for the reply Michael. Your photos look great! I have been messing around with iPhone camera and photo apps for over ten years now and for the most part have come to greatly prefer the stock camera app for most of my shooting. I use an app called Argentum to shoot B&W as I like the UI of that app and like having one-tap access from my home screen to shoot in B&W, but the results certainly aren't any better than the stock camera app. (To be honest my results don't look anywhere near as good as yours no matter what app I use, but I'll keep trying!)

Thanks a lot David and AAlfano, I am expecting my film photos to arrive any day now. It's weird, I have been getting my film developed at Precision Camera (rff sponsor) since I've moved back to the states. It feels strange to mail my film out and expect it to arrive in a week or so in the mail. For the last 20 years, I got used to bringing it to labs and picking it up a day or two later.

Somewhere on the road, my ride stopped at a gas station and I got out of the car to stretch my legs and I took this photo.

Hello Michael, are we allowed to travel to Cuba now, how did you get there, please advice.

I will answer for Michael as I travel there every 6 weeks or so.

You buy a ticket on jetBlue, American Airlines, Delta, or a few other airlines direct to Havana. You check any one of the 12 exemptions to the travel ban when buying the ticket on-line or on the form at the airport. You buy a $50-$100 Cuban tourist visa from the airline when checking in for your flight. Also, you must stop believing the US government story that traveling to Cuba is difficult.

Your photos of Cuba with the iphone are a great insight into a fascinating place Michael. It ties in with your education that they make a visual anthropological story. The ultrawide shots in particular really give a feeling of being right there. This is the best photo series I've seen for a long time.

Those are gorgeous film photos!

Thanks a lot valdas

Hello jorgef2002, Bob is right I just took a flight from Fort Lauderdale to Havana and said that I was traveling under the category of 'support for the Cuban people', I checked that box on the Southwest Airline website, and I stated it at the airport when I was checking in and getting my visa. It's actually really simple. I have been to a lot of countries and have had to jump through hoops sometimes to get visas, but going to Cuba was really easy.

Thanks mcfingon, I really like the wide lens on my iPhone and I am extremely happy that I used my phone a lot on my last trip.

Classic Mike! Close and cool.

Tonality in these images is what 99% of Leica Monochrome users needs to learn :)

Fantastic shots, has gotten me excited as we are planning on going to Cuba in April (couple of nights in Havana and Varadero).
We are planning to stay in Chinatown/Downtown side, is this the place to be?
Any places or restaurants you recommend visiting?

Thanks a lot. Chinatown is a good location because it's in the center and there are lots of interesting things nearby, including a good restaurant called "Los Nardos", which is directly across from 'Capitolio Nacional de la Habana'.

+1 for noir filter on iPhone, Apple have pretty much nailed B&W with that.

Anyhoo, excellent photos regardless of the medium :)

photos are great really but its too much poverty tourism for my taste. also that attitude-look how they live like **** in communism-well i lived in communism and it was much more advanced than west in many things. also very poor conditions exist much more in west-in communism/socialism noone was homeless in east eueope-every family had its own flat-maybe it looked poor but still house is much more than tons of homeless i see here in netherlands have. i could make more trashy depressing junk photos here in amsterdam but i wont do it-i will let people dream their capitalism perfection dreams further. and i hope i go back east as soon as possible. this is not a place to live. i would rather live wars and hyperinflation again than this hell with sugar voating. sorry for interrupting and please continue-i wont discuss anymore on this topic-any questions you can dm me.

Great shots, Michael, I did not see them earlier for one reason or the other, truly great pictures. When will there be a book with your work? It is about time.

I am starting thinking about getting a Zeiss Distagon myself!

Erik.
