Yesterday I handled a Reid II (similar to a Reid III but without slow speed dial) which has a removeable back. Part of the back complete with film pressure plate is grooved and slides out completely when pulled vertically down after removing the baseplate thus revealing the shutter curtains.

The dealer has this listed as "for periscope use" but I cannot see how this modification would enable periscope use ... unless the camera without a film was attached to a periscope and the shutter set to 'B' or 'Z' so that an operator could look through the periscope with the camera back removed.

I am wondering if the modification might be to enable the use of single frame cut film attachment which could be attached/substituted for the existing sliding back?

The camera has naval markings. I do not have a photo of the sliding back.

Has anyone come across this modification in any other Reid camera? Any ideas as to what the modification is for?

Thanks.
