Hi

Just a heads up that on Friday 27th May 2011 at 12.30am, i left my camera and lens in a taxi in Brighton UK

The camera is a Leica M8 serial number 3198712, it has quite a lot of scratches on it ..especially on the screen, itt also has a 'thumbs up' attached.

Camera has a Leica Summicron 28mm f2.0 asph lens attached with leica hood. Serial number 04039775.

Obviously i am absolutely gutted about this..

I have contacted the police and the taxi firm 'city cabs'

have also posted an ad on Gumtree's lost and found offering a reward and am in the process of notifying as many camera shops as possible.

I am asking you guys if you would keep an eye out for me, as i am sure you are aware ..this in an unusual camera.

Many thanks in advance

Mike

Very sorry to hear of this. Make sure you cover the online dealers not just the "shops" FFordes for example. Download the Leica dealer list from the website and ring around.
And set up a watch on e-bay.

I can just imagine that gut wrenching feeling when you realised what had happened. Quite spoilt your day and really upset the weekend.
Feel for you over this - glad it wasn't me.

Now just hope something turns up - keep your fingers crossed.

Oh crikey, I'm just down the road in Worthing, but often in Brighton so will ask around.

I would have thought a scrupulous cab company should surely have a record of the driver who picked you up assuming you phoned for it? City Cabs aren't a small firm in Brighton, so hopefully the driver is an honest soul and turns it in as lost property, assuming their next pick-up didn't swipe it.

I think they have an office on Queen's Road that might be able to help, if at least let you know the lost property rigmarole with them etc.?

Hi Vicky

Thanks for your reply

I have phoned city cabs, they said that it is down to the driver to return anything that is found ..it does not go through the office ..

Unfortunately the chances are the next punter picked up the camera.

i asked the city cabs if they can trace the driver, they said they could not, i do not believe them, all trips are logged onto computer ..this is something i will be following up this week.

I can not see why they can not tell me where the next pick up was taken to, unless it's a privacy thing

Am living in hope at the mo

I would have thought the police would follow up on the driver and next passenger identities. The value "lost" must be high enough to warrant a few 'phone calls. Have you made the taxi firm aware the police are involved?

It might also be worth trying those cash generator/cash converter type places as someone who's picked up a camera without knowing what it really is could conceivably go there to turn it into hard cash quickly.

I can't see why the police would spend much time on this. No crime has been committed, they are not in the business of 'lost and found'. Aggressively pursue the taxi firm, that's your best bet, although I'd be a bit worried if they were to acquiesce and give you the info about where the next passengers were picked up and dropped off, that's not really any of your concern at all.

Fingers crossed for you though, this must all be rather galling.

Most of the local pawn shop/money places have been informed ..they were very nice and helpful

Cheers

I have made 2 more calls to the taxi firm ..not helpful at all ..quote "we do not get involved in lost and found ..we used to, but it caused us a lot of bother" well thanks for that .. how very helpful..

They say they have nothing on computer of pick ups etc made ..unless the taxi was booked!

You may need to file a "Stolen Item" report to get any action from the police. It is a felony as far as value goes.
Sorry to hear of your miss-fortune :(

Just called the police again, very helpful, will need to leave it a couple of days before they class it as stolen.

It's not stolen... why would the police get involved with the driver or passengers? Unfortuately, all you can hope for in this situation is some honesty from whoever found it.

I see, I know it was not stolen, but, after a few days wait, you can file Stolen Report?. It is like filing a "missing person" report, you must wait 48 hrs or so, in case they show up.
