Traveling With an M9....

The drive is a back-up. No need to upload during tne travel.
Umm- I thought we were talking about backup when traveling in this thread.
Backup of your home computer is a different matter.
I have two 1 Tb disk in raid as my primary data disk and a portable one off-site for my backup.

So how was the Airstream living? Hope it went well as my family and I just finished an 8,500 mile trip out west with our 34' Airstream. I took a ton of photos and haven't had time yet to get to them all.

I travel for work too and bring my camera with me so I'm not afraid of the extra weight my MacBook Pro causes. I like to upload my files from my card/s every night and carry a portable backup drive to backup my laptop.

I am all about traveling light as I only shoot with a 28mm and 50mm lens kit.

Traveling in this particular Airstream was 'okay'. It was a 1973 Safari, 23 feet long. Our retirement 'dream' has been to sell the house, liquidate assets, buy an Airstream and travel the countryside. We thought we'd test it out so that we actually would know what it was like. We came to find out that it was a lot of work! Not as relaxing a vacation as we would have liked, and we did have to fix a few things on the trailer during the trip. I think if we were to do it again (which we are talking about), we'd probably try a small RV from one of those rental companies (like El Monte) and see how that is. It is definitely a different sort of vacation and mode of travel, and I can see how it would not be for everyone -- ultimately it might not be for us -- but we're glad we did it, we didn't drive each other crazy in this 23ft space (very important!), and we saw an amazing part of the country in a very unique fashion.

No, you are right. I am thinking of using the drive for back up while traveling. I will have th IPad with me. Can't I use this set-up? I would download from the camera or from card reader to the drive.

An iPad is great for displaying finished files, but not very practical as a backup device, as it has limited memory space, won't accept external disks (as far as I am aware) and cannot open raw files. There is an app, but it is desperately slow, so the best strategy is to shoot DNG+JPG and not store the files on the iPad, but upload them to a server or iCloud. Reason for me to get a Macbook Air.

Jaap,
I will think this more over.
Must I have a laptop computer to download images to the external drive? If Yes, then I will have to ind another method.

Raid, IMO the best is to have a laptop + an external HD and download the files on both. In this way you have to copies of each one.
robert
PS: external hd like the WD passport or similar are small andf not too expensive.

Hi Robert,
I have traveled with a laptop before, so I could replace in my travel plans the Ipad with a laptop. I bought yesterday an external drive by Toshiba with size 500 GB. I also have two WD drives for 1TB and 3 TB. I was hoping to get away with the IPad.

A trick to safeguard data integrity is to lock the card before inserting it into the reader (and unlock before using it in the camera again obviously)

My thoughts were to use the IPad to upload images to the internet. I will not do it then.

You can do that. But it will take time. You need to get the Apple card reader and USB set.

Don't think I'll be buying a Macbook Air for vacation, as I already have a 15" Macbook Pro that I use on jobs (and it's one more bag to carry!). Here again, for vacation I think I'll just stick to my current method. Of course, if I come back from the next vacation and all my cards failed, then I'll likely be singing a different tune!

I have been using the macbook air for basic production programs and I loved it's portability. The new macbook pro retina 15inch seems promising , for as it seems more like a 15inch macbook air..Do you have the macbook pro retina? or the old fat one? I am close to buying a 15inch retina for it's portability.I have just gotten into shooting stuff but I wouldn't consider myself a photographer just yet.My dad had his contax on a glass drower when I was growing up..it was an slr.

My Macbook Pro is about two years old -- don't know if that's considered 'fat' or not. For work it's great, and I have taken it on vacation occasionally, but it's just one more thing to worry about on a trip, and one more bag to lug.

I travel for my job and work a 7 on 7 off schedule and can be anywhere in the world during those 7 days. (I happen to be in San Fran as I type).

My clothes go in a 22" TravelPro Crew 7 bag. My camera with lens attached (Ricoh GXR-M and Leica 35mm Summicron) along with my 6 year old MacBook Pro, Bose Headset, company iPad, backup drives and cables/chargers goes into a STM Velo medium laptop messenger bag.

I also pack the latest Bare Bones Bag in my 22" suitcase with an additional lens and extra camera stuff.

I can easily get to my camera while traveling through airports. When I get to my hotel and have time to get around the surrounding area to photograph, I use the BBB to carry my camera gear.

I have the new Macbook retina, which feels quite a bit smaller than the old Macbook, but the Macbook Air is considerably smaller and lighter feeling than either. The 11" Air isn't much larger feeling than the iPad.
