My friend's proposed trade

Yep.

And then, there is the pain of finding another Nocti, <or any other "weird / rare item > and having to pay more, for one that is in not as good shape.

I don't sell Leica lenses any more, unless a better one is in hand, or I am absolutely sure that I'll never regret the sale.

But bodies? They come and go.

Well said -- I'm looking at my nocti images right now and there is just no way I could trade this thing away. I would be depressed for weeks.

I think you're landing in the right place. A Noctilux won't get obsolete; digital bodies will lose value. Wait awhile for that M9.

Yes. This.

I sold two different 50mm Summicrons in succession, but only because each time an even weirder/better fifty was about to land in my hat. The lenses I've ended up with aren't going anywhere.

40mm Summicron-C, and a 50mm Version 2 Summilux. Polar opposites.

The forty is the best all-rounder I've ever used. It's never had a bad day.

The Summilux just friggin' scares me. It sees things.

Definitely a much better deal for your friend, who's also being very wise to invest in rare lenses as well...

Sold several of those Nocts in the .6.5k range not all that long ago, so lenses are not guaranteed to appreciate. Comments about the Chinese market are spot-on. But an M9 will definitely go nowhere but down...

If you use the Noct all the time, then your best bet is to buy a used M9. There are plenty of them on the market, with more to come...

If you look just at current value, it depends which Summilux we are talking about. If it's the E46 version you get the better deal. If it's black paint, you make even more.

Not sure what the possible value a year from now has to do with a trade that you do now.

(1) How much do you use the Noctilux?

(2) How much would you use an M9?

Forget 'exchange value' of substantially incomparable items (is a pig worth more or less than a bed?) and concentrate on use value.

Cheers,

R.

Amen. What good is the Nocti's increased value if you aren't using it? To use Roger's example, the market may say the bed is worth more than the pig...but not when you're hungry.

It's the latest version of the pre-ASPH 'lux with the built in hood (E46?) -- black chrome, not BP. My friend indicated that it's from 2001.

Here is the Noctilux in question:

Leica M3 + Noctilux f1 E58 by MikeScarduzio, on Flickr

Here is from http://www.antiquecameras.net/leicamlenses.html

- 50 Noctilux F1 Type 1........................$4,900 - 5,800
- 50 Summilux F1.4 Type 3....................$2,900 - 3,600
- Dual Range Summicron-M....................$650 - 1,000

Roughly speaking, you pay US 4,900 + 650 - 2,900 = US 2650 for that M9. Not a bad price if you ask me.

Roland.

PS: The 'lux v3 is quite sought after at the moment. In contrast to your Noctilux, it focuses down to 0.7m.

If you really "need" that M9, ask for $1500 on top of the trade.
Maybe remove the DR from tne trade, plus $750 cash.

ditto to all the comments, especially that it is hard to compare a digital body that will decrease in value with a leica lens

The M9 kit to me appears more valuable, but as many have said, that will not be the case in 12 months. Make the decision based on what you want, and not value, and maybe it'll be easier to decide.

Didn't we just learn recently (months) that there are NO replacement sensors for the M8 and M9 cameras. (I suspect this created the body inventory for the Monochrome M?????)

Are there parts on the Noctilux that have a similar risk of unrepairable based on considerate operation of the lens, and no parts repairable to fix it. Don't consider droppage in each comparison.

When the bloom comes off the rose on the M9 (your inclinations) will you regret no longer having the Nocti (your words "I use it a lot")

Have you any anecdotal information on the use of the Nocti on the M9, and will you regret getting the depreciating M9 and Not having the Appreciating Nocti to use on said M9, if that's likely?

Will you regret the exchange, if you have 10 shots with the Nocti during the exchange, on the M9 if possible, and finding there is something magical and not attainable by any other combination.

Will you publicly admit to being an idiot if the deal is simply very bad for you?

Has any Leicaphile ever done any thing with any Leica body and lenses of this nature, that you heard tell of... any similar anecdote that has resulted in it being all wrong for one of the participants, AND DO you have a gut feeling at any level, that you would get the short end of this deal?

At this point in time, how may M9's are there, or shortly will be in the market for acquisition...???

Now, same question about the Noctilux?

Does the other party exhibit great nervousness or anticipation about this transaction, or any indication that he/she is under terrific stress about this deal falling through?

Let's see.... OK, I know I can think of other questions, but I may have given you enough food for thought to kill one night's sleep here? I'll post again tomorrow. I know it's not all about the money, but it should be.

Oh, and by the way NOT ONE of the four items you mentioned is MINT.
The best any of them can be is Excellent Plus. Mint is unopen, sealed, not used. Now they may qualify for the trite phrase "Minty" coined for eBay, or they may be "collectible" only by some standards.

Good luck pondering. Clearly no one posting here has offered up a solution for you that won't have you wondering for a couple of years.

Optimal, keep your stuff and buy the best, least expensive M9 you can buy. You can obviously afford it.

Your heirs will thank you... a wife, a brother in law, a son/daughter, nephew/neice...

Envision any one of them shooting this equipment on a trip to a family reunion in Pasadena.:bang:

Just because something depreciates doesn't mean it's a "bad deal." Depends on your wants and needs for it, costs and benefits. A $30 tank of gasoline is gone in a week or two. A $30 lens found on Ebay lasts you 20 years. Which is more valuable?

Didn't we just learn recently (months) that there are NO replacement sensors for the M8 and M9 cameras. (I suspect this created the body inventory for the Monochrome M?????)

Where did you hear that there was a shortage of sensors for either camera? There is no more supply of LCD screens for the M8, but I haven't heard of any other parts being unattainable.

Please provide a source for this claim.

Just because something depreciates doesn't mean it's a "bad deal."

Nor does it make the M9 any less of a camera. And some might even like the look of the images more than what come from the upcoming M.

This certainly is an interesting if not slightly awkward thread...

Maybe sell you DR and either your M6 or M3 to put towards a digital M. Selling two of the items will already put you at the halfway mark.

Ask yourself, truthfully, is your final destination likely to be M9 + Noctilux too? If so, you're much closer to your goal with Noctilux and M6 in hand than with M9 and Summilux in hand.
