Leica M8: Poor mans M Monochrome?

I find that using the M8 for B&W and the M9 for color works well for me

Here, I used a rigid Summicron with IR cut filter at ISO 1200 or so, wide open. We had just returned from dinner, and I quickly took some photos.

Thank you Helen.
The 1,333 factor makes the Summicron a short tele, which is perfect for portrait shooting. Since the IR effect seems to help with B&W, it may be a winner in the end.
The M9 has mo cropping, so it suitable as a general camera for color or B&W, but I will use it as a color camera.

Just an aside. The Nikon D700 is a great black and white machine if you want to use a DSLR, The menu allows you to select different parameters for BW (contrast and digital colour filters etc) and the rendering is very smooth and nice. I usually shoot RAW for image quality so I do not much use this however. Same with my M8 - always RAW then convert in PP if necessary. Tahts my preference anyway.

What a difference.

i tried a Monochrom this past Saturday for the 1st time....a HELLUVA camera! Beautiful to look at and use.

for now, i will lust after one.....but enjoy the next best alternative, a well sorted M8!

I find the M8 to be quite a satisfying camera for BW. IT's been gone for 3 years, but the files remain. I just re-processed a few from Vietnam in LR4/NIK:

I love the B+Ws that come out of my M8 , this one is a JPG using a 1950 Summaron 35 3,5

and this one is taken with a 1964 Summicron 50 ( RAW file converted to BW)
