The Bertele Sonnar 5cm F2 Picture Thread.

Boojum, I have no idea what a similar Leica lens would be. Granted, I am not a Leica guy, but seems to me that there is not much in the leica stable that renders like a sonnar. I guess one could compare the Bertele to a current model f2 summicron, but apples to oranges in my opinion. JMF, some stunning photos of the Swiss Alps!

I would like t see a test of the Skyllaney Bertele against a similar Leica lens. The Bertele colors are almost edible but not strained or artificial. For want of the technical word I would say they are "solid." The Bertele and the Amotal are my 50's. I like them a lot for image and color.
The Leica lens designed at the same time as the 5cm f2 Sonnar is the Summar. I'll put that on the list- I have a perfect glass Summar.

While the f2 Summar was develpoed about the same time as the original Bertele f2 Sonnar, not sure how one would compare a 1930s design vintage Summar to a modern production from Skyllaney.

I've shot my 1934 5cm F2 Sonnar alongside the Skyllaney lens.
Step one: Take Picture With Bertele Sonnar.
Step Two: Remove Bertele Sonnar from camera.
Step three: Put 1934 Sonnar on camera.
Step 4: Take picture with 1934 Sonnar...

I'll try the same with the Summar...

I expect it to be similar to the 1934 Sonnar vs Summar I did years ago. Simce that time- I also used a Sharpie to blacken the sides of the elements that had lost paint. That produced Flare when not expected. Fixed now.

On first sight, less difference in contrast than I expected. On second sight, there's less shadow detail in the second one (look at the garbage bin!). Did you or your software adjust the black point to look similar?

The out-of-focus highlights on the pickup truck, far left edge of image,
look different between the two lenses.

I do straight exports from ART and Lightroom for my tests, same profiles. I do not adjust the Black Levels.

The Uncoated 1934 5cm F2 Sonnar has perfect glass, and a beautiful bloom that acts as a coating. I've shot with this lens for over 20 years, the first 5cm F2 Sonnar that I converted to Leica mount. I also modified the mount so it would focus to ~0.8m.

Most of the difference: Uncoated 1934 Sonnar compared with a Multi-coated lens.

Also- these are all hand-held, informal test taken at slightly different times.

I wish I had a Bertele Sonnar 5cm 2. I don't.
I would compare it to several 50/2 lenses, including the CV 50/2 APO.

I do no think that I have posted this Bertele pic. Shot on an X2D. The CZJ Sonnars have a large enough FOV that they cover the entire 100MB sensor, woohoo! "If it is red take a picture of it." This is JPEG, SOOC. Bertele has edible color.

OK, it has been depressingly gloomy here, down below freezing for about a week and now above and rainy. Hard to beat cold and damp for fun. But these guys are happy regardless. Elk are native and abundant around Clatsop County, OR. A coastal herd of about 30 was killed because they were some sort of problem. I forget what the reason was but folks were upset. You will see them in certain places. This is the "Hammond Herd" which lives near Hammond, OR. It was taken on the road back from Hammond to Warrenton, another place this herd hangs around. They loiter on the roadside and the locals are used to them. I was upon them going out to Hammond before I saw them and came back to take some photos. They look more out of focus than they are as it was rainy and misty. They taste really good. ;o) Some folks even get licenses and tags to shoot them but the wardens have been known to look the other way if you are feeding your family with Elk. This was with the trusty M-9 and the lovely Skyllaney Bertele, at f/5.6 I believe.

And, yes, first gunshots and they all disappear. No more wandering herds. They move deep into the forested hills out here.

I am tired of Winter! Cold and Snow outside, and fighting Colds and Snot inside.

We get Foxes and Deer mostly. I need to train them to run and and down the 300ft driveway to get it down to the blacktop. Maybe try putting some food on the blacktop right before it snows.

Antibiotics did their job, hopefully today can grab the M9 with the Bertele on it and catch the herd of deer. One fox is trying to convince us that it is a Dog and needs to be adopted. Likes to come up on the Deck and take a nap.

I saw the Matt Osborne youtubereview of the pre-production Bertele lens. He liked it, but seemed to favor the Carl Zeiss version (it kinda grated on my nerves that he repeatedly referred to the Carl Zeiss lens as a Zeiss-Opton). I wonder how long it will be before Skyllaney has these available for purchase. I will probably buy one.

I have a fox that conducts regular patrols of my front porch in early morning, spot it on my front door camera 3 or 4 times a week.

I think Matt was referring to his post-war 50mm F1.5 Sonnar, used with an adapter. I do not think he has a CZJ 5cm F2 Sonnar.
