Harvest Time Again

Darkness surrounded me as I walked outside onto the terrace to breathe in the slightly cooler air and feel, really feel the night. I looked up and was awed by the full moon, suspended in a frame of clouds and it took my breath away.

It was still sultry, yet not unusual for the first day of Autumn in Georgia. The feel of the warm breeze was a welcome change from the artificial manmade atmosphere indoors, as provided by the air conditioning system in our little home. The night was humid, warm and dark, after so many days of the hot summer, but it was not uncomfortable. However, I longed for the coming change of the season.

Reflecting upon the words of Walt Whitman, I felt a longing to experience the renewal of life once again:

In the upper 30s here this morning. Thick fog, long pants and a wool vest. Windows are closed. We’ve eaten supper indoors several times over the last week. But days still get into the 60s. Looking forward to my winter in the darkroom already.
