But hey, it's OK...

In some other thread, somebody commented that at least combat photographers take photos with the aim of discouraging further war. I don't think many realize how many photographers are out there simply to document events for those who run the wars. We rarely see their photographs, particularly in the event things go wrong.

Two totally seperate issues.
Seriously, who here would enjoy their daughter or son being raped and photos taken while its happening.
W T F with you guys?

You do realize that some one's daughter was killed in an explosion, and photos were taken while it was happening, right?

It would be pointless and tasteless to try and judge the relative "worstness" of these events though, I must admit.

No it's not ok and this thread appears to be some sort of weird points scoring exercise that seems destined to follow on from the other disaster that's been hogging the main page with it's ugliness of subject and combative behaviour of some Rffers.

This is a great forum but this stuff leaves me cold!

It's a pretty simple point. It's about what people get upset about, and why, and how, and the language they use to describe their anger or even just distaste. It's also about the nature of knee-jerk reactions.

Valdas understands it. So does Tunalegs. But Keith: do you REALLY think I meant it was OK? And Fireblade: a bit of self-examination and critical thought rarely comes amiss.

Cheers,

R.

If I knew we could score points then I would have participated earlier :D

But seriously, it's not okay, and it's not not okay.
On one hand life just sucks a whole lot of the time for a whole lot of people. Some privileged people are there to document it so the rest of us can either make a meager contribution to make ourselves feel better or use it somehow to our political/social advantage by scoring points in one way or another.
On the other hand, bad things happen and being ignorant of those things is just plain ignorant for want of a better word. Ignorance is not bliss, it's just ignorant. We should be aware of our world and our fellow people, even if all we get is some compassion for those close to us when their life sucks (which it will).

Anyway, back to the more important topics in life, should I try to develop my own C41?

Sums it up pretty well.

Personally I wouldn't develop my own C41 without a Jobo roller machine for tight temperature control, given the very short processing time.

Cheers,

Something to think about, might just do a single roll experiment instead of all in. Summer here the water comes out of the tap at about 38 degrees. The problem is having enough ice on hand to get it down to 20 for b&w!

As a veteran - the photo reminds one that there is no safe MOS in a war zone.

Any with regards D.I.Y. C41 - there's a youtube video, which shows someone from the Lomography World processing color film in their kitchen sink using a Rubbermaid tub full of warm water.

To be perfectly honest, I could not imagine doing C-41 color processing in the same room where I store and prepare my food. Maybe it's because I use to do E-6 processing at work and always insisted on switching on a fresh air vent, which had an electric blower.

Sure, you can. It might even work very well. Or it might not. After all, isn't slapdash quality often a part of the Lomography ethic?

I wonder if the guy in the picture survived. His leg is mostly not there, and you can't see the other one at all. Specialist Clayton was probably crouched down, looking through her - what, Nikon D4s? - in order to emphasize the appearance blast. She also documented the action of this type of explosion at close range on standing soldiers.

Remember the photos of the soldiers standing under a mushroom cloud from the 1950s? This picture has all visceral effect of that one plus action! I'm sure Hilda Clayton would have been a great action-commercial photographer in a now-never-to-happen civilian life. Losing an artist is the worlds loss as well. Too bad.

War, huh?

Wait, this was a training exercise that did not involve actual combat with the enemy. We were training Afghani soldiers how not to get blown up. Bin Laden is dead. Why are we fighting there?

Then we have our first Canadian daughter it was no issues with ultrasound. Years later we came with our second Canadian daughter for pre-born ultrasound. Doctors looked at us and told us what because who we are they feel safe to tell us what our kid is female.
Now in Ontario doctors are not allowed to tell it. Why? Because many of those who are coming to Canada from India and other countries are making abortions if it is girl. And numbers are huge.

But it is OK, because nobody is killed in the blast.

ps, I have done water tub C41 with Unicolor chemistry. It works as easily as black and white, and the colors go wrong in very interesting (and sometimes pleasant) ways. You can fix most problems by scanning and photoshoping.

What an odd mix of topics. I prefer the film conversation, but what will happen if everybody just buries their head ...

I wonder if it was a case of double loading the mortar. Its not uncommon to drop another grenade in before the first one's propelling charge has had a change to go off..
