Hey all,
Just picked up a pristine IIa with Rodenstock lens, after browsing Retinas for a while. But I am now shooting my first test roll through it and have noticed 2 problems. One is the slow speeds, which was expected. When shooting anywhere under 1/25th, the shutter stays open indefinitely until I move it to B. Second is the focus is a bit off. Closest focus, which should be 1m or less, is only in focus at around 5 ft., and what should be infinity on the scale, is in focus at 4m on the scale. :bang: Can these be worked on by myself, or is it better to be sent somewhere for a CLA? And is the focussing issue fixable? Thanks!

Hola Iluminati,

Both problems are most probably fixable.

The slow speed issue is most probably due to gummed grease in the shutter clockwork. It is relatively simply to clean with lighter fluid like Ronsol or Zippo. To do it you have to disassemble the front cover of the shutter (on B setting!), and be careful not to move anything that may zip rocket to the outer space. You can find basic instructions here:
http://www.rolandandcaroline.co.uk/synchro-compur.html
http://rick_oleson.tripod.com/index-88.html

On adjusting the rangefinder, here is a very comprehensive description from Chris Sherlock website (great site for Retina information): http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~Srawhiti/retina2arfadjust.html

The disassembly involves small screws and being able to handle small parts, if you are not so comfortable with that then Chris could be a source for a good CLA (Clean, Lubricate and Adjust).

Good luck with your camera, it is a nice piece of equipment.

Best
