For Aperture users, what photo editor did u choose?

I think the reports of the death of Aperture may be exaggerated. My understanding is that Apple has no plans to kill it off; they just can't promise that future operating systems will be backwards-compatible with Aperture. Me, I have it up and running on two MacBooks and an iMac. The latest OS I have is Sierra.

Aperture is indeed dead. No one can buy it. There are no upgrades to it and Apple has clearly stated they won't support it.

Some can use it while they it still works, but the day is coming when something will break on it.

A real shame- Aperture created the DAM software category and for a good deal of time, was market leader. It should not have been discontinued.

I tried to update it to use my X-E3 and couldn't. It's not that it's dead, just abandoned. I looked at some software that the ex apple engineer for Aperture has designed, it's a big boost over Photos but doesn't look like it beats Lightroom.

Obviously they couldn't make it work on a phone and that and the watch are the only products that Timmy and the gang care about anymore.

BTW all, speaking with an Apple Aperture specialist, he stressed to check with him before upgrading to a new OS, I'm reading between the lines there, the end is near..... done with my LR trial, it works with Silver Efex, photo management is not good- 90% of it I will not use- months fee is a rip off...... I can get by with Photo's but no extension to Silver Efex ugh......

I'm not a big fan of Photos, but manage to use the Nik Collection very well from within Photos. I go: Image-Edit with; and theres is listed all of them. When you click save, the Nik program will close and the adjustments are saved within Photos. If you change your mind, you go Edit and Revert to original.

Hmm. That may be an easy/no cost prescription being I already own solver Efex AND the path to Photos is there already. Until I like a Plan B. ... Thank You!

I need to correct my earlier statement (which is wrong):
"It does not have a function for resizing when exporting like Aperture does. I use that all the time with Aperture."

I found the function to resize on export. File-->Export yields the appropriate menu to resize.

Still using Aperture, as none of my computers can update any further since about three years ago. When one of them dies, and I have to replace it, not sure what software I'll end up with.

Really like the workflow with Aperture and Photoshop, not looking forward to learning something new.

Best,
-Tim

Aperture will work under virtual machine with Mojave or other older OS. This can be done for free using Virtual Box or a little easier for a fee using VMWare Fusion or Parallels.

Or it will run fine under 64 bit Catalina except for some nonessential features if it’s patched using Retroactive, link below.

“All Aperture features should be available except for playing videos, exporting slideshows, Photo Stream, and iCloud Photo Sharing.“

https://medium.com/@cormiertyshawn895/how-to-run-aperture-and-iphoto-on-macos-catalina-46a86d028b87

I’ve been using both these methods for a few weeks.

What is meant by "virtual machine?" I have Aperture on a 15" MacBook Pro, running Sierra. It works fine, but if I have "virtual machine," I'm not aware of it.

it's a software emulator. Typically people run Windows on Macs using a virtual machine, although it's easy to run older Mac OS versions on Mac hardware using a virtual machine, too.

Look up Virtual Box, VMWare Fusion, Parallels Desktop.

Personally, I see little point to investing more effort and work in using Aperture at all. ...

  • Aperture has not been developed further since before 2015, and does not run at all on macOS Catalina since it is not fully 64bit.

  • Lightroom 6.14 (the last perpetual license version) is similarly gone on Catalina; to use Lightroom into the future, I would have to purchase a subscription version.

  • The extremely little that I need a editor like Photoshop means that I haven't updated Photoshop since PS CS5.1. It is similarly end of life on Catalina.

So what to use? I'm exploring three options right now:

  • Apple Photos used with Gentlemen Coders RAW Power - This is a powerful editing combination with excellent raw conversion and useful image management. One of the key advantages to this setup is that it runs on macOS as well as iOS and iPadOS.

  • On1 Photo RAW 2020 - I'm just getting started with it, but this looks to be an extremely good macOS image editing system with some decent capabilities for image management.

  • Skylum Luminar - I'm not sure what the current version of this software is. I experimented with a trial version some time ago and was impressed up to the point where the trial ended, but didn't have time then to go further. It has some very useful features and capabilities, and has moved on a couple of revisions since.

Supplementing all three of the above, I have Serif Affinity Photo - Again, this package runs on macOS, iOS, and iPadOS. It is a very full featured Photoshop replacement. Like Photoshop, I need what it can do outside of photographic image editing pretty infrequently so I keep the nice user manual and workshop book handy when I want to use it. It produces excellent raw conversions and has the Photoshop-like bazillion features that I need only once in a blue moon ...

I believe in going forward, not locking myself and my photography into the past. New systems will not run older macOS versions or Aperture. New software requires learning ... I'd rather put my energy into learning and move forward.

I did use Aperture for many years.,,,
Then went to Lightroom / I think v3, it’s on a very old desktop which just collects dust in a corner... I liked Lightroom till I ‘lost’ Lots of photos

Generally I do not do much post processing, just a tad of contrast perhaps
Try and nail exposure , moreso when shooting digital

Now on my MacBook Pro I just use their ‘Photo’
Not the best but good enough for what little PP I do

Boring Gurl I am, lol

In my case, I find there is substantial 'point.' :)

There are several apps that have worked fine for me for years under older versions of Mac OS, that I don't want to upgrade as there is zero need, that won't run under Catalina, so I already run a virtual machine for those apps. These are simple to set up.

Once such app is Photoshop CS3, another is an older version of Quickbooks, 2 or 3 others, and then there is Aperture. Sure it hasn't been updated but it didn't really need to be.

Having used it for years, the learning curve is flat. :) That's a major time savings.

It's also a major time savings not having to convert all my Aperture libraries. Even if that is the sole reason to use a VM or the patched Aperture, that's a major convenience.

[*]Aperture has not been developed further since before 2015, and does not run at all on macOS Catalina since it is not fully 64bit.

Yes, it will run fine on Catalina (with the exception of a few minor features, ones I've never ever used) as outlined above.
