About the speaker:

In the last eight years, since 2011, Harvey Stein has had four major photo books published, starting with Coney Island 40 Years (2011), then Harlem Street Portraits (2013), Briefly Seen New York Street Life (2015) and his most recent book, just out this past September, Mexico Between Life and Death (2018). He has had eight books published to date. Harvey will show and discuss images from the Mexico book, in which he explores the culture and rituals of our southern neighbors. Visiting Mexico 14 times in 18 years, Stein documents time spent there during holidays, festivals (when even small towns come alive with vibrant celebrations of the dead, myth, ritual and religion) and daily life.

His photographs provide an illusion rather than a representation of reality. They portray the instant of recognition, embodied in a fraction of a second; the ordinary is made transcendent. The images reside in a surreal world halfway between reality and fantasy and explore the constant mysteries of life and death that seem to surround the traveler in Mexico.

As time allows, Stein will also show images from his other recent books and talk about his fascination with photo book making and working in long term project mode.
