There's a nice 3 page article on Matthew Brady in the current issue of US News, somewhere near the middle of the magazine. Fairly informative, it talks through the effect of his wartime photography during the (American) Civil War on his personal and business life.

Not mentioned in the article is the sell-off of most of his glass negatives from the Civil War most of which were used to build greenhouses. The vast majority of the negatives were lost to history although many of the images remain. He was also stingy at sharing credit for the photos with his on-location photographers who did the grunt work.

There was a sidebar on the Brady's credit-sharing habits in the print article; US News compared it much to a modern photo studio in which only the studio gets credit for the picture, and not the specific photographer.
