Everyone should remember : That "puddle jumper" picture of HCB's was cropped for printing! Horror of horrors!

He shot the photo through a fence and part of the fence blocked the lens, as can be seen in the negative pictured above.
 
I am not a fan of cropping to achieve composition.

But it is true not having to change lenses or use a larger, heavier zoom lens can be useful.

The prime lens optical resolving power has to be just below the sensor pixel density resolving power to minimize the loss of image quality due to aliasing artifacts while retaining the highest possible spatial resolution for cropping. This should be easy with very high pixel densities.

One should not ignore the demands on focus accuracy. Both manual and auto-focusing are more challenging when cropping is used to achieve composition.

Well, that's certainly a valid reason to crop.
