Why Doesn't the Shutter Close When Off?

I am curious about this for all mirrorless cameras, really: why not have the shutter close and cover/protect the sensor when the camera is turned off or when a native lens is removed (this would be tied to the shutter release without native lens setting for using non-native lenses--sorry, no shutter close when switching lenses in this case).

Seems like such an obvious thing to do. The A7's sensor is so large and exposed. I can see these things having a much much higher rate of accidental sensor damage than any other camera.

So is there any reason not to do this?

The shutter blades are far more delicate than the cover over the sensor. Sounds improbable but it's true. An errant fingertip could destroy a closed shutter but leave nothing more than a smudge on the glass.
