Strategies for Photographers: Thoughts On How To Apply For Fellowships and Other Competitions
Monday, March 4, 2013, 6:30 p.m.
Aperture Foundation
547 W. 27th St.
New York, NY 10011

http://fellowshiplist.blogspot.se/2013/07/uk-artists-international-development.html

The programme is open to artists of any artform:
- who have received recognition for their work in England
- who do not have extensive international experience
- whose work will benefit from launching better international networks - either artistically or in terms of developing an audience for their work
- who can demonstrate an interest in their work from an overseas partner/host

Individual artists, including creative producers, curators and editors, can apply. Although the Artists' international development programme is aimed at individual artists, small groups of artists who normally collaborate in their work can also apply. This could include, for example, musicians and visual artists who usually create work together, or writers and their translators. If the group does not have a shared bank account, awards to successful applicants would be made to the lead artist named on the application form, but all members of the group would be jointly responsible for the award.

Their dedication to depicting the truth requires knowledge of the country and experience of the terrain in order to represent the situation in all its complexity.
The Carmignac Foundation promotes the award via an exhibition in Paris and the publication of a monograph. It also purchases four of the photographs included in the report.

The Fulbright Program is an excellent one. I myself have been on two of these. The first to Kazakhstan in 1994 and where I am writing from and the 2nd in 2006 to Rajasthan an hour south of Jaipur. Both times I was the accompanying spouse. My wife taught in both instances. In India I also gave lectures and focused on my photography of the remote area we worked in.
India is a great place for a Fulbright since they take so many applicants. My wife has served on the applicant screening committee since then. Who wouldn't like a free trip to India?? The Indian government also supports this program.
There are both teaching and research grants as well as working in community service. This program is a win- win program with all involved gaining from the experience.
Many of us can contribute our knowledge and experience to students in India.

At the end of our stay the Fulbright program asked for photographs documenting my wife's work there. I gladly gave them half a dozen photographs.
The next year I found that my photographs had been used in promoting the Fulbright program. Photos of my wife teaching were used in the Fulbright information book, bookmarks, and she was featured on the Fulbright poster which was sent off to colleges and universities across the United States and other places.
Some of my photos can be seen on photo.net

W. Eugene Smith Grant for Humanistic Photography

from dpreview article on 09 April 2014 (link for complete submission details):

The W. Eugene Smith Grant for Humanistic Photography is seeking entrants to win a $30,000 (~£18,062) grant to work on a current or future documentary project, and up to $5,000 (~£3,010) if a finalist is deemed 'worthy of special recognition'.

Named after legendary American photographer W. Eugene Smith, the fund provides money to photographers who, according to the fund’s president Marcel Saba, 'have created bodies of work that illustrate the human condition and provide a voice for those who cannot provide one for themselves'.

Photographers applying for the grant can visit the smithfund.org website. Up to forty images may be submitted for the grant. Photos must be from an ongoing project but can include past work that is representative of the photographer's vision of a proposed project. Deadline for submission is May 31, 2014.

A three member panel appointed by the Fund's trustees will evaluate the 'substantive' merit of the work. Candidates may be asked to write a detailed plan for the project and answer panel questions.

Established in 1996, the fund was established to honor Howard Chapnick of the legendary Black Star photo agency. Previous winners of the grant have included Eugene Richards, Paolo Pellegrin, Stanley Greene, James Nachtwey and Sebastião Salgado.

http://peeppol.net/articles/read/16...ree-Days-at-Sea---Travelling-Artist-Residency

Access Gallery invites submissions for its new Travelling Artist Residency Program, in partnership with Burrard Arts Foundation and with Contraste agence d’art, titled Twenty-Three Days at Sea. Unlike traditional residencies, which offer artists accommodation at a stationary site for a designated period with the aim of producing a new body of work, Twenty-Three Days at Sea is utterly unique: it will offer selected artists passage aboard a cargo ship sailing from Vancouver, Canada to Shanghai, China. Crossing the Pacific Ocean takes approximately twenty-three days, during which time the artist will be considered “in residence” aboard the vessel. The inaugural two residents will be sent to sea in August and September 2015.

Young Explorers Grants (YEG) offer opportunities to individuals ages 18 to 25 to pursue research, conservation, and exploration-related projects consistent with National Geographic's existing grant programs, including: the Committee for Research and Exploration (CRE), the Expeditions Council (EC), and the Conservation Trust (CT). In addition, the YEG program recently teamed with the Luce Foundation to provide increased funding opportunities for fieldwork in 18 Northeast and Southeast Asian countries, including Brunei, Burma/Myanmar, Cambodia, China, East Timor, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Eligibility

The National Geographic Young Explorers Grants Program supports a variety of projects—and an age-range of applicants—that are generally not covered by other sources of funding.

Applicants are not required to have advanced degrees. However, a record of prior experience in the fields of research, conservation, or exploration should be submitted as it pertains to the proposed project.

Funding is not restricted to United States citizens—foreign nationals are invited to apply. Researchers planning work in countries abroad should make great effort to include at least one local collaborator as part of their team.

Where Should I Apply?

The Committee for Research and Exploration funds hypothesis-based scientific research. Consult the CRE website for more information on the fields of research funded.

The Conservation Trust funds innovative and applied approaches to conservation with potential for global application. Consult the CT website for more information on the types of projects funded.

The Expeditions Council funds exploration and adventure around the world. Consult the EC website for more information on the types of programs funded.

Grant Limits

Young Explorers Grants vary in amount depending on significance of the project, though most range between US $2,000 and $5,000 at the maximum. National Geographic Society funds often serve as complementary support—thus the program encourages applicants to seek additional, concurrent funding from other sources.

Grant Restrictions

National Geographic Society grants may not be used for indirect costs, overhead, and other expenses not directly related to the project. Fringe benefits are also excluded, as are salaries.

Funds may not be used for travel to scientific/professional meetings or conferences, tuition, vacations, study abroad programs, volunteer activities, legal actions, land acquisition, endowments, construction of permanent field stations, or publication of research results.

Grant recipients are expected to provide the National Geographic Society with rights of first refusal for popular publication and other media coverage of their findings.

Obtaining an Application Form

Applying for a Young Explorers Grant is a two-step process.

First, you must submit a pre-application form online. If your pre-application is approved, you will be sent an email with a link and a password giving you access to our full application online.

Before you submit a pre-application, there are a few things you should take into consideration:

The pre-application form can be completed in multiple sessions. You will be allowed to save your work and complete it at another time.
You will be asked to upload an electronic copy of your curriculum vitae (CV) while completing the form. Instructions will be provided.
Please make sure that your browser is configured to receive cookies.
This system works best on Internet Explorer 5.5 and Netscape 6.0 or higher.
If you have any questions about the online pre-application form, consult our Frequently Asked Questions.
If you don't find the answer to your question, Please email the question to the fund you are applying to: [email protected], [email protected], or [email protected]. Please remember to include Young Explorers Grant in the subject line.
The Young Explorers Grants Program accepts pre-applications throughout the year. Please submit your pre-application at least eight months prior to your field dates, at least six months for the Expeditions Council. If your application is approved—a decision which takes about eight weeks—the relevant grant program will send you an email with a link to the full application online. The names of three academic or professional references and a curriculum vitae are to be included with the full application.
