Apart from the novelty of it, how desirable is it to include the sprocket holes. Isn't it something one will quickly tire of? It seems to call attention to the film, at the expense of the subject. Agree, or disagree?

I think the sprocket holes detract from the image.
 
I agree: I don't think the sprocket holes add anything in the general case. They might make sense if you're doing a layout with a technical photographic theme, used sparingly, but then you're really highlighting the film/format technology rather than the photograph's content.
