Barrett, did you see the Berenice Abbott prints? I'd like your or anyone else's comments. She's one of my fave photographers.
 
Looks like a good time was had by all! I look forward to catching up with you guys again in July!

I was cocky and wanted to show off my Mamya 6 with 50/4.0 in remarkable condition. I make fun of myself by saying that my new "M6" is named "Junior." I strutted around like a peacock, then Cristian goes to his apartment a block away for some gear to share and comes back with a 6X9 Linhoff.

Christain says that this is his small Linhoff and modestly states he also has a 4X5 Linhoff. Instantly I becamed outgunned, but also I state that perhaps the rangefinder on the battleship New Jersey is bigger. Hard to imagine a 4X5 Linhoff. The 6X9 Linhoff was not only an interesting severe display of savage German engineering, boy was it heavy. Also view camera movements were available. "How come my Leica can't do this I say."

Talk about extreame and over the top. Good to know that there are others in the group that are extreame and now I don't feel so crazy. In a word:BRUTAL. Cristian won the cool gear prize.

The Berenice Abbott display was not overhyped. As number 6 out of an edition of sixty, the twenty-four prints were shot with an 8X10 view camera and technically they are superb, but as a group of shots they are so unified that I made it a point to mix up the order of viewing because the whole display did not have to be processed in a linear manner.

It seems that this edition was assembled from her best work that dealt with the thyme of "A Changing New York." Like today there are dirty streets and bordered up buildings that indicate economic downturn and decay, but this is balanced with a crowded street arial veiw of what I believe is Herald Square.

There is also an element of street photography. A man just happens to be coming up the steps to exit a barber shop at the decisive moment. How many times does this happen with a large format view camera?

Over the past twelve years I have been viewing these 24 photographs and they remain both interesting and fresh; and they still inspire me. I also brought a book published by Aperature that is part of their "Master Series" that I found under the 59th Street Bridge, but IMHO the 24 photographs do a better job of establishing her as a master and great photographer. All she need was two dozen shots.

Hey Damaso, a lot of things happening.

Jeff showed us an amazing print that links well with his earlier work of Brighten Beach. He captured dusk digitally handheld in this amazing shot. Jeff impressed me again!

The shirt I wore to the meet-up was my final project for the class at FIT BTW.

When you get back, give me a call and we'll go see Berenice's work.

Is there a reason why this tread is invisible if you are not signed in. I'm wondering if this was a problem for some viewers because the tread kinda disappears.

We had a lot of fun and laughs, and already are planning a June Meet-Up.

We kinda agreed that in June we will meet at the most southern tip of the High-Line for an outdoor event in Chelsea. For those that are out of towners it is not far (walking distance) from Penn Station. There are plenty of places to eat and drink, and also lots of galleries.

We wondered if David Copperfield's was too out of the way for many, or was it because of all the graduations going on that we remained as a smaller intimate group. Although we only totaled seven people, we opened David Copperfield's at four in the afternoon and left at 8:30 at night. I say in June we should meet-up around lunchtime.

The June meet-up will be less about gear and more about shooting. Bring only what you will use. Barrett knows a building that is full of galleries. We will develope a Plan B in case of foul weather, and we are open to all suggestions but of couse the regulars would and should carry more weight.

Please post your suggestions here, before we start a new thread.

hey Cal, that sure is a mint Mamiya 6 you got there! glad that you are bonding with it well. seeing these photos, i remember you from that first meet-up back in january, was it? i was one of the other asian dudes, carrying my trusty R-D1. btw, who brought an R-D1 this time?

oh and that Linhof Technika sure is beaut!

Thanks everybody, it was great to see all of you at D. Copperfield. I had a lot of fun and I saw amazing cameras as well.
Thank you Barrett and Christian for posting the pictures, I really like the one where I'm posing with the Technika camera.
I can't wait for the next outdoor meet-up in Chelsea.
