Le Mans 24h | M8.2 | 90 Summicron pre ASPH

I used the 90 Cron pre ASPH also at Le Mans this year.
It indeed is a better portrait lens lens, than one for sports, as the off centre performance is really lacking (which can help in portraits, but also gives for some interesting effects in motor sports).

Anyway - I still love this lens (although an additional APO is now tempting after this experience).

Mine just showed up, should hopefully shoot a concert with it this weekend. Good lord its a big lens! Huge compared to the elmar I have and my collapsible summicron

During my stay at a farm of friends:

The male goose was a real challenge with focussing, as it was quite a quick runner and very camera shy ;-)

More practice needed with mine. Need to get to know it better especially on an M8. Here's from a recent Photo Walk.

Ok that guy knows how to pose! I'm not a fan of animal shots but this is quite good :)

Thanks Renzsu - I am not a big of those either ;-)
It has been the first time, I shot animals like that, as I was locked in a friends farm over the weekend with nothing more than open fire, meat, beer and a bunch of animals - choose, to take a few of the little things, to play with the Cron ;-)

The geese were the most challenging, as they were running around all the time - hard to capture @ f2.
The dog is a smarty - not the beggar type.

I just accidentally (I didn't expect the seller to accept an offer that was only 60% of the buy-now price, but I wanted one for reportage work anyway!) bought this 90 summicron (canadian chrome version, not sure which one that would be) in rather bad but fully working condition for 300€... http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260397319392&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
is that an ok price, especially in germany? if not, the seller is a professional dealer, so returning the thing shouldn't be a problem.
and, if the coating damage turns out to be bad, can this be fixed by a professional?

thanks in advance

Simon, the lens looks like it has been run over by a cargo train!
I would not have paid 300,- EUR for that.

Not the scratches outside worry me - the bent looking front assembly (picture from the side) worry me the most (likely a crash lens).
It is very unlikely, you will get that money back, trying to sell the lens later in this condition.
Additionally potential buyers shy away quickly, when a glass damage (scratches, coating, separation, etc) is eminent (myself included).
I don't touch any second hand lenses, where a glass damage can be seen on inspection (be it a small scratch or otherwise).

I got an absolute mint sample of the latest pre ASPH Cron for 600,- EUR, these sell nowadays for 600-900 EUR, depending on condition.
Your deal doesn't look sweet to me - I would back out, if it is not too late.

I can return the item within a month and have a one year warranty on it, but if it is in good working order and produces the pictures I want, I might not. the "bent" part looks like the generic collapsing hood to me, no? hmmm...
mint pre-asph ones start at about 700€ here, aspherical ones at ~1500-2000€, that's out of my range ;)

my user M2, bought 1.5 yrs ago, comes from the same seller, it looks just as beaten up but has always served me well and is as smooth as can be, he's been nice to deal with last time...

Hey Simon, I have the same lens and mine looks worse than yours.....I remember when I first bought it (8 years ago) and I sent it to Sherry K. to clean it, she asked me "what did I do to it", because it looks rough.....but the glass is excellent and everything works really good......

I bought it for a very good price with the understanding that I would probably never sell the thing......and yeah, I don't think the hood is "bent"....try and see if you like it, if not, you can always return it......

Outstanding, Michael!

That bokeh is magical to me... That's why I carry the same version... :) Looks like that was f/2 or very close... Very smooth rendering...

Cheers,

Juan
