Hey folks,

been a long time follower of the forum. Was really excited to very recently found out that there is a dedicated street section here.

However, my enthusiams was killed after reading the negative **** towards the introductionary photos by the mentor. It seems to me that some people wanted to be the mentor themselves and others just had too high opinions of themselves.

Well, after a few days of calming down, I thought why not give this a try since I feel the interweb in general lacks a fine, constructive, and well humoured venue to discuss, guide and chitchat street stuff.

So here goes. For the last six months I've been living in East Asia shooting with my bessa, outside work, free time allowing. In a few weeks I'm returning home to Finland, where I've struggled to produce any worthwhile stuff.

For this purpose I bought last summer an ep3 with the 17mm kitlens. Now that I'm going back, I'm wondering should I keep this up or just snap away with my belowed bessa and pay the development costs.

Below is a set from last summer from Finland shot with ep3 before leaving to Est Asia. I realize color thread is just below, but I wanted to have my say in an own thread. So sorry for that. Any feedback would be highly valued! Cheers all, Jukka

Tho i generally dislike photographers' -shadow -shots, i still like #3. It's a bit grotesque.
#5 is nice. Rather abstract but still a photograph, not a "special effects" image. #6 is alright, good light, maybe the guy on the left with his back is too much? #7- you've scared that teen a bit, now haven't you :D
The rest doesn't really do it for me, but that's just me.

I was just scanning old negs two days ago from working days at YLE and leisure evenings in Helsinki :)

I'm with you about bitching on RFF mentors.

I say, keep this thing for colors and bessa for b/w.

5 and 6 are cute.

Cheers, Ko.

I like number 2 and 3. 4 is oddly interesting. I can't say it is bad or good, just interesting in a cluttered but sort of amusing way - it keeps the eye moving. Without the bird in the foreground it wouldn't work at all but the bird is the point of interest the helps keep the eye circling around the frame - otherwise there's much too much foreground.

2 works primarily on an excellent combination of colors and a strong sense of depth and moody weather.

3 is just quirky enough to be a bit of fun with the shadows creating a forced sense of perspective and the shadows and background work with the subjects to keep the eye boxed in.

TBH in some of the rest it almost seems as if the people in the frame are spoiling the shot rather than adding to it.

Color is great and under-utilized in this genre, so keep at it.

The one thing I notice about all your images is the light -- you 'see' light and appreciate it. Not everyone does, oddly, in photography.

My favorite is #2, not just due to the light but that it seems almost like a 'daily diary' kind of image. The sort of photograph one makes when you just live your life each day.

If you have really "calmed down" then why the BS thread title and use of expletives to bash people who have a right to an opinion? Especially considering the Super Lame way they person's work was presented...

I like the shadow shot and I love the fact you pulled a Friedlander and included yourself. I think they all work together visually with #2 being the exception. Well done...

It's not what you say but how you say it.

Just trying to help, km25. You've posted a few times recently that you have no friends on RFF and that you've been black listed on other sites. The reason may be as simple as the way you say things.

3 - 6 -9 for me are interesting, the other not bad but not strong enough to capture more attention.
3: there is something surreal in it,
6: It' s all about the light...a literally love this, something a little in Bruce Gilden direction :)
9: I really love this. The colors, red of the seats agains the green landscape through the window, the relaxed body language of the boy let me think of a long journey...

1, 4, 10 : nothing so special in these.
2: a beautiful atmosphere, not so sure about the framing
5: interesting effect, good exercise. Not sure about it.
7: interesting expression on the girl face, unfortunately the road signs and the background disturbs a little bit
8: special light (wow, the light in the north) but deja vu (already seen) many times..

This is just my opinion which of course could be wrong...
Thanks for sharing

#7 Robert but don't you like the way the front wheel of the bike lines up with the front wheel on the bike sign on the ground? Great timing and I think its terrific. And that wonderful little sign in the far left (blue sign, white arrow) pointing right at both front wheels...Not to mention the repeating shape of the other bike in the background and the walking sign and the girl walking. Even that orange sign and red sing make an arrow head that points to the girl on the bike.

i quite like the composition in those, no clutter, well framed, balanced etc despite them being pretty ordinary scenes (not meant in a bad way)
The light is quite nice and the colour not overdone

Well, the thread title is poorly chosen imho - I have to side with KM-25 here, I am afraid.

Somebody wrote that you "you 'see' light and appreciate it" but to me that means they lack in street - as street photography is 'bout story telling. Only #4 (lady in red) and maybe #6 and #9 are good enough imho. As others preferred other pictures, the pictures I didn't like probably are better then I give them credit.... But to me, they aren't that special.

The yellow bike, the shadow of the bike, the second bike in the background are a strong element here, you are correct. The girl walking back (the one with red trousers) in between the two bikes and with the sign of a man crossing the road is also an interesting element. The yellow signs and the arrows do not convince me so much, but this is only my reaction...

I think you might find what Winogrand had to say about single photographs telling stories interesting. I happen to agree with him.

Robert I believe arrows & arrow shapes tend to point and thus cause you to follow where they point. And then there the line that also leads right to bike.

A big thanks to everybody for comments! I went through all of them in detail. This (taking photos) is subjective and thus every opinion counts - even the bs one haha. Luckily my day job is in social sciences getting critic on a daily basis.

Neither do I feel any financial pressure or even personal need for ego flattering, photography for me is formost a hobby.

At best internet sharing is just having sincere human interaction and hearing the takes of other people on your personal vision. Flickr really doesn't do that any more for me. Too many attention whores blatantly self-promoting in billion plus groups faving this and that in the hope they themselves get noticed.

I hope this place could turn into a venue for sharing and feedback. And if the mentor could popin now and then that would be brilliant.

As for the "story telling", I neither never really understood what that means regarding single street pic. For narratives I tend to read Dostojevsky or Dickens :)
