Excellent - a Street Forum - What is it good for?

Jukka, I refrained from commenting on the thread about all the hate for street, because I'm one of the haters, and didn't feel the need to bother posting there in the lions' den of self-congratulation. However, I want to say here that if all street photography were like the examples you've shown, I would pay more attention to the genre--these are really good, and I see what you're doing there.

Also, for me the color actually works--it isn't just a non-functional feature as it is in so many photos, so I think you should explore that direction more. Not too many people who shoot in color make it work without drifting into parodies of color, but your use of it is synergistic with the photos in a nice subtle way.

Maybe I would change some things, or maybe I wouldn't, but I'll respect your intentions at this point, since you seem to know what you're up to.

Something you might want to think about is the ignore function in the forum's software. There are some people who never say anything worth reading, or are constantly jerks, and yes, you can turn them off so that you don't have to read them, in the forum settings.

Agree.....

On a side note, are you in the city?

Like your large format work BTW.... Portraits are very good whether LF or not...

My shop is one block in from the Art Institute--NW corner of Wabash and Adams.

Thanks. I've always shot a lot of people on the fly, only people I know, but recently I'm focusing on my studio skills, in LF.

...imagine how wonderful it would be if we took the time to post as many photographs as we
do comments.
Don't mis understand I am big on FREE SPEECH so my ears are open BUT my eyes are always open too.

cheers

Hey folks,

been a long time follower of the forum. Was really excited to very recently found out that there is a dedicated street section here.

However, my enthusiams was killed after reading the negative **** towards the introductionary photos by the mentor. It seems to me that some people wanted to be the mentor themselves and others just had too high opinions of themselves.

Well, after a few days of calming down, I thought why not give this a try since I feel the interweb in general lacks a fine, constructive, and well humoured venue to discuss, guide and chitchat street stuff.

So here goes. For the last six months I've been living in East Asia shooting with my bessa, outside work, free time allowing. In a few weeks I'm returning home to Finland, where I've struggled to produce any worthwhile stuff.

For this purpose I bought last summer an ep3 with the 17mm kitlens. Now that I'm going back, I'm wondering should I keep this up or just snap away with my belowed bessa and pay the development costs.

Below is a set from last summer from Finland shot with ep3 before leaving to Est Asia. I realize color thread is just below, but I wanted to have my say in an own thread. So sorry for that. Any feedback would be highly valued! Cheers all, Jukka

I think you have a collection for a series here please post in the :
"Style is a Clock without hands" thread

cheers

#1, #2, #3, #6 I feel have potential, but still comes up slightly short.

#1: Great light - I'm not sure if the bright spots on the window is your flash or if it's a reflection off a building a la "no flash corner", but either way it provides nice fill in. I think it comes up short on the subject matter. Child on the right has a nice expression with his cone in his mouth, but it is so minuscule relative to the whole frame that it gets lost.

#2: Nice mood & nice framing how you framed the head between the greenery. Not enough bike however and it feels incomplete. This might be one better served stepping a couple feet back to include a tad more of the cycle.

#3: I don't mind that your shadow is in it. The couple adds decent foreground to the image. Because of where the light ends up & that the angles of the shadows direct your eye and add depth, it would be nice to have a more interesting background and not just a row of ?store-front? doors.

#6: Sun in the background & good use of fill light. This image is just lacking an interesting subject imo.

Just my 2 cents as they say.

Thanks for sharing your pics.

jky appreciate your comments and I think this is why as pointed out by Frank this needs to be viewed and commented on as a body of work so it probably should be moved to the other thread and looked at and discussed in that manor instead of the each individual piece. HSG posted this and I think this review of Eric Kim's portfolio by Mano's, Give it watch and this is really the way a lot of live critiques go with instead of just one person commenting it is others to.
Here's the link
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IGGX-vHjO4

For those not familiar with live critiques they are MUCH different from the critiques you see on the web. First usually everyone in a college class room crit would in some way be close to each other on the visual journey. First and foremost it's a live real time exchange of ideas.

When you are in a basic intro class it is about just getting the image and revolves about a lot of technique. Then the classes that are just a step up start dealing with very basic visual elements and how they support of don't suppoter the image. And these crits are usually about one image.

The next step up in crits you start dealing with the creator making a statement of intent and then showing a series of relating images and how those images are supporting or not what he saw and was important to him to capture and whether he was successful in the over intent and if those elements support the intent. ANd it is usally always about a series of images and how they are or aren't doing what I just mentioned and how or how not they are working together.

Then you get to graduate level of work and if anyone has sat through a graduate show and defense they can be intense. A paper, almost thesis like is written about the work, there is an exhibit of the work and then the professors from the program all try to see if the statement matches what is being shown in the exhibit. They all try and rattle the student to se if they were indeed sincere and to find out more in the defense of the work.

Of course programs are all different amd so are professors but as I show there is usually a progression from single images into bodies of work the more visual students become. It's a long process and with crit is each class usually held weekly or every other week over the course of 4 years and usually about 2 photograpahy classes a simester thats a lot of critiques .

Now i am in no way saying this the only way to learn these things and since the internet is around we all have a great resource to learn and grow visually. We just all have to have that deisre to do so and an open mind and a willingness to change sometimes.

I think to many times (I am just guilty though I do try and fight it) we bring our own preconceived idea into the conversation instead of being open to maybe things that are not the way we would do it and/or are more complex than what's on the surface. Like how images fit together in a larger whole. Or is the intent of the creator try to communicate an idea trough a series and maybe if the work is showing us all a little piece of him then he is really arriving.

I do feel a live critique is a great way not only for the the person getting their work discussed but for everyone involved. i feel bad for those that don't have that resource.

Thats why I think we need to have a place to do just what Frank set up for us here. Show and discuss individual images but also to show and discuss a series of images. To see how they all flow together in some visual sense and to see if they are matching the title of the body of work.

All of this is a life long journey and most of us are on it. Lets enjoy the journey together and keep out minds open. We have the rest of out lives to become more closed. Lets try and understand that the way we see the world might different from someone else and thats not a bad thing but a great thing.

I love this quote by Weston.
"Anything that excites me, for any reason, I will photograph: not searching for unusual subject matter but making the commonplace unusual, nor indulging in extraordinary technique to attract attention. Work only when desire to the point of necessity impels – then do it honestly. Then so called “composition” becomes a personal thing, to be developed along with technique, as a personal way of seeing." - Edward Weston

Again thank you Shirley and everybody else for comments! Very cool that you did take time to reflect on my stuff. There is food for thought here, both positive and negative.

I would like to respond to each individually, but I'm on the road somewhere rural Cambodia, and the internet connection is frustrating to say the least.

Will also post the pics to the other thread as suggested.

Folks, greetings from Bangkok! I'm a little bored and stuck at hotel so I thought to amuse myself by posting some more of my street stuff here.

These are all black and white film, shot mostly with rangefinders during recent years from Beijing to Havana. Please feel free to comment and critique, that is the way for personal development.

Again, I repeat myself, I do like this street section here, and follow it when ever there is a change and time.

I didn't post these to the series thread, because I'm not sure if here is enough consistency for a true series.

Thanks! I know that was bit of much of images at once. But like stated I was bored. I am also starting to think of photography in general rather as sets than single images.

This is sort of new for me.
