It's not hoarding if it's cameras or fountain pens.

Avoiding camera GAS... ...They tried... :ROFLMAO:

I remember back in the 70’s, I used to collect matchbook covers. It was free. I had them pasted on notebook paper (minus the matches of course). I don’t know what drove me to do that but I had some interesting ones.

Doesn’t matter anyway. They became victim to an attic “clean out” in the 80’s during my Dad’s retirement.

There are Matchbook Collecting Clubs and Societies.

My collection was very small and modest.

This guy, however, is pretty hardcore:

I browse the offerings of Myplasticheart.com and Giant Robot with a bit too much interest.

Since childhood, I've had a collection of Matchbox-brand minature diecast cars. But recently, I got the itch again, and in a short time, my collection has tripled in size, from 2 to 6.

Postage- and "Cinderella" non-revenue stamps including matchbox labels: It's been way more fun for me ever since I decided to be a specialist, rather than a general collector. Cameras are one of my themes.

Fountain pens: There's a camera-themed pen which has caught my eye, and if I buy it, it will double the size of my current collection, and at ~200 USD it will be by far the costliest item.

By a strange coincidence I bought three fountain pens this week, but this is unusual as I haven't bought any in a while: a Pilot Custom 823, Pilot Custom 74 and a TWSBI Eco. I usually buy the Japanese pens direct from Japan as they are usually half the price. The 823 is one of my so-called 'grail pens' - pens which are expensive, but many pen collectors have to buy at some point. I have a collection of about 30 pens, but that is quite modest compared to serious fountain pen hoarders.

If it is causing issues, it is hoarding.
If not, it is collecting.
This is true, but a serious point is what are issues and to whom.

My wife works in health and has some clients who hoard. To them it is normal, but the fire risk to their neighbours and (mental and physical) health risk to themselves can be significant.

For most of us, the biggest problem arising from having lots of cameras or bikes etc is choosing which one to use. Of choice paralysis becomes evident then it’s likely time to think about what matters - using or collecting - and to take some suitable action to create freedom again.

Dear Stephen,

I sort of ran out of room to store fishing rods and fishing gear along with boats and kayaks so I needed something to accumulate that was smaller.

Cameras seemed like a good place to start.

You may like this. It's incidentally about flyrods:

Dear chuckroast,

Thank you for the link, I enjoyed it a great deal!

Jack Howell is quite a character. He is a professional symphony musician, master smoking pipe carver, and apparently, a fly fisherman.

I've shared that link many times to try and explain that things are "worth" exactly what the market will bear.

How are you liking the Pilot 823 so far? I used to own a Mont Blanc 149, but it never really felt comfortable to me: It felt awkward and unbalanced while writing, unless the cap was stuck on the end, but said cap never stayed in place for long.

Dear chuckroast,

I'm getting close to having almost as many cameras as I do fly rods. All my fly rods still work though, including the bamboo rods, many of my cameras do not! ;)

I know the feeling. All my cameras work but ... I am going to be in Metro Chicago very near the annual pen show in the NW suburbs. It's going to be a ... difficult ... few days ...
