it's been a while since we had some current zi porn...and with all the talk about the zm 50/1.5 c i thought i'd put some up.

hi,
where this side grip come from?

cheers

Argh...I managed to miss this thread the first time around but got squarely hit this time. That chrome ZI is one nice looking camera. So much more subtle and stylish than the (in my opinion) gaudy M6. I do need a longer baselength RF to accurately focus my new 90 2.8 Tele-Elmarit I. Hmm... I just wish there was somewhere in Toronto where I could actually handle one and hear the shutter for myself!

Joe - do you find that the half-case helps the shutter noise any?

it's an m grip with a hole drilled in the bottom to allow access to the film release button.
there is a zeiss made grip now too, available from popflash.

half case helps but i only use it on cold days (most of the long winter here).
the shutter is not THAT loud, for street shooting it's a non issue.

thanks, it was what i've tought.

You're not from quebec by any chances?

sorry missed your reply before.
i'm not from quebec, originally from nyc but live in alberta now.
the grip is from photoequip.com but it's an older model.
ebay and sometimes here they are available sometimes.

I came to this thread to try to convince myself to buy it as a backup of my M5. I know you would have made it appear more beautiful than it is. And yet the main issue for me is esthetic. All leicas are beautiful (the Queen is the Michelangiolesque M5) the CLE and the Hexar are gorgeous. This one is to me straight ugly. Especially the chrome version. No personality. No equilibrium and elegance of lines. And most of all way, way too large. If they only had cut 1-2 cm on the left moving the counter in front of the advance lever...Incredible as it is the specs are ok for me (but reliability make me nervous), so the biggest obstacle is that terrible dreadful look. I think The would have been better off with Porsche design, which proved itself in the beautiful RTS III. This one is a disaster.

well i don't own a ZI body.......yet. I have owned numerous Leica bodies, of which I still own the M2 and 3. As far as another film rangefinder goes, the only other body I could see myself purchasing is the ZI. For quite differently from you, I find it a rather fine, sleek looking, almost manly camera. all my ZM lens are black, so if I get it new, I think I'll get a silver ZI. I think the white on black numbers are easier to read, and the chrome/black looks smashing. for me it is not dreadful or terrible at all, the ZI has a pleasing form. Is it any bigger than a M5?

the ZI is actually VERY close in size to an M7. I also think it looks very masculine and strong- not as sleek or elegant as a "real" M, but that's what my Hexar is for haha.

Joe:

Probably someone has already posted this, but what, pray tell, is the lens mount?

If it's Leica M mount fine, but it not, then what? And, if not, what lenses (other than Zeiss Ikon) are available for the Z1?

Hello Thomas,

I've posted pictures of my ZI (formerly Akiva's) and my M2 side by side. Have look here:

You'll have an idea of the size of the ZI.

Cheers,

Marc
