I agree Tim, that the combo of Summar & Planar will be Great for Portraits

I've sort of sworn off adding new lenses to my kit. But I'm starting to think I may make an exception for either the 50 Summar or a 35/3.5 Summaron. Have to start looking for a beat-up copy of either/both.

How does one recognise a coated Summar from an uncoated? Is it by serial number alone?

No, many of the uncoated Summars were coated at the factory at a later date, apparently it was an affordable upgrade at some time.

It is by sheen on the glass elements. The difference between an uncoated ('plain' glass) and a coated one ('blueish' hue on glass) is quite distinct.

From a certain production date on (which date?) they were all coated though.
