Date someone completely wrong for you.
After ending a long-term relationship, I had a short whirlwind romance that was nothing short of being the steepest and most turbulent roller coaster ride. She challenged my beliefs, was shrewdly critical and proudly recited her friends' criticisms of stating she had the personality of sandpaper.
She was perfect for me -- I recommend dating someone entirely wrong for you at some point in your life. Every day was a battle and completely shattered my perception of the world to the core. I understand this may seem negative -- but it truly was a positive experience. Some of my beliefs toward the world were absolutely confirmed; others challenged and morphed into new understandings. And new things learned.
In the context of this forum, she improved my photography. She noticed that my photos exhibited technical perfection, but lacked an emotional spirit. I would toss photos for not being sharp enough or lacking the correct light. She, in her own manner, pointed out a truth that I did not want to accept. And like all the best teachers, they will be blunt, harsh and I threw (metaphorically) a tantrum but knew inside that she was right. My best photos at the time that truly captured the spirit of the moment were those shot with the point and shoots. The camera did not get in the way of the shot.
Today I remain a changed person; she was exactly what I needed at that point in my life. And my photography has much improved, but always a work in progress.

Loved the description/analysis of your relationship with Rosanna! Life does seem to provide us with the lessons we need.

Yes, the analysis is very interesting. Choosing opposites is not that unusual.

mgilbuena - the first two b/w shots are great, they reveal (at least to me) the shrewd, hard, calculating, sandpaper side and it's in her eyes, not the pretty face they live in.

My one and only "ex" from the 80's.
It has been quite a trip down memory lane to find the photo. Sifting through many bad photos!

First real love, but not my last!
Relationships begin and end in the strangest of circumstances... 4 years later, she was a different person entirely
Absolutely great shots.

Some beautiful photos here. It's been quite therapeutic to read this thread actually. I'd post a photo too but I'd have to fish it out from somewhere and then scan it.
Hmmm, I wonder what current boyfriends and girlfriends would think of this thread...

How would we do that?
Is there a RFF Youtube video?

I had no hopes for this thread when it came to my mind, but it has worked out well here. It is most likely because of having "good people" at RFF. Letting it lose on Youtube would bring in the ugly sides, with ugly accusations and videos you really should not be posting anywhere.

My latest ex. She still wants to stay friends, but it's been tough.
I think each post has to specify who was dumped by whom.
I'd bet there are more dumpees than dumpers.

One of the things photography teaches us, perhaps the most important thing, is how beautiful people are and how beautiful the world can be.
